About Piraeus

Family, Mediterranean, authenticity, taste and happiness are the world of Piraeus salty cheeses. Piraeus was first launched in 1999 named after the Greek port city, Piraeus, a direct link to the birthplace of salted cheeses – Greece, and symbolizes freedom, authenticity and the Mediterranean spirit. Our first advertising campaign presented a Mediterranean family celebrating with salty cheeses in various situations of joy and taste.

Ever since, Piraeus has been leading the world of salty cheeses in Israel with standards of enjoyment of quality and taste, combined with convenient packaging and product innovation.

Piraeus offers a wide range of products, among them:
Bulgarian cheese:
our principal product is Bulgarian cheese. Throughout the years we have launched a range of new and innovative products in this field, thus e.g. in 1999 a very user friendly packaging with an easily extractable plastic basket for convenient use was launched under this brand. This value innovation, unique to Piraeus at the time, significantly enhanced the Bulgarian cheese consumption in the country. As part of the response to a healthy lifestyle we launched a Bulgarian cheese with lower fat percentages (5% and 3% in contrast to 16% as was the custom in the category) and in 2006, a mild Piraeus Bulgarian cheese was launched with lower salt content and a lighter and more delicate texture in comparison to traditional Bulgarian cheese. As part of Piraeus’ ongoing development we launched an additional special product – Bulgarian cheese in cubes, enabling more convenient use of the cheese as a supplement to upgrade salads, pasta, watermelons, for serving, etc.

Zfatit cheese: In the field of the Zfatit cheeses, consumers can find under the Piraeus brand the classic Zfatit range, produced by traditional technologies. In 2005, as part of providing a response to changing tastes, the Piraeus brand of mild Zfatit was launched, with a lower salt level (similar to the Bulgarian cheese). The Zfatit is a cheese especially rich in calcium and considered to be the “queen of calcium” of salty cheeses. It is used as a delightful supplement to salad, a sandwich and for eating as is.

Yogurt-based ethnic labaneh (Aslit): Piraeus is also active in the world of labaneh with a selection of Aslit labaneh made from yogurt in the traditional method (dripping from a bag). This selection too offers various tastes, such as olive oil, hyssop and spicy peppers.

Sheep and goat cheese selection: Piraeus offers a wide selection of sheep and goat cheeses among which are: 20% feta cheese, 16% goat feta cheese, 5% goat Zfatit as well as 5% low fat sheep feta, which is unique in the world of sheep and goat cheese. In 2011 Piraeus also launched two goat yogurt drinks (mild and sour). The world of sheep and goat cheeses is considered healthier in its food qualities as this milk is different from cow’s milk in nutritional values and is also characterized by a rich and different taste.

Chemed cheese: This veteran and unique cheese in the cheese market is marketed under the Piraeus brand. It is a cheese developed in the Tnuva dairy and is a blend of Bulgarian and Zfatit cheeses. The traditional cheese was launched at first with a 6% fat content, and as the health trend developed, a lower fat version (5% fat) was introduced in 2007. Chemed cheese can be used for eating as a dish supplement and is wonderful for cooking and baking.
